Tranmere story
Billy Ashcroft is an English former forward and central defender from Garston, Liverpool. He began his professional career with Wrexham, where he became a key figure during a successful 1970s period, before joining Middlesbrough in 1977.
After five seasons on Teesside, Ashcroft moved to FC Twente in the Netherlands and was the club’s leading scorer in 1983–84. He returned to England with Tranmere Rovers in 1985. Ashcroft is a member of the Wrexham AFC Hall of Fame.
